Manny Pacquiao beat Joshua Clottey via unanimous decision in a match held at the Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium. The Pac Man is hailed as pound-for-pound best fighter in the league, although Clottey is a highly regarded fighter as well. But many boxing fans said that this is only ah warm up game for the ultimate fight of the century.

Clottey held a tight defense and didn’t let Pacquiao near his face. Showing his fighting skills, the Pac Man focused on Clottey’s body, and threw 1,231 punches –more than ever before. His opponent got in 399 punches.

The twelve round fight went for all twelve rounds, which is different than how most people saw the fight in their head. A knock-out was expected by many.

There are rumors that the Clottey fight is the last the Filipino fighter will commit to for a while. He is rumored to be running for political office in his native Philippines, where he is a very highly regarded individual.

Before he heads to retirement, many are hoping that he will commit to a fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Mayweather used to hold the record for pound-for-pound best fighter in the league before he went into retirement. He came out of retirement to fight Pacquiao, but the two sides could never come to an agreement.

The fight was available on pay-per-view, but is going to be shown again this Saturday night on HBO for those that missed the action. Fight fans should be sure to watch this transpire, as it was a great match.

Many boxing fans are expecting that the next opponent of Manny Pacquiao will be decided after the fight between Mayweather vs Mosley fight which is on May 1,2010. So who will be your bet. Everybody is ready for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey bout this Saturday evening, and the ProBoxing-Fans.com staff is going on the record with our official picks and predictions. Does anybody see Clottey pulling off the huge upset? Do they think Pacquiao will win by knockout or by decision, or what will happen in the bout?

Scott Levinson: Does anyone else feel this is more dangerous for Pacquiao the closer we get to March 13? Something inside is telling me Clottey is going to put forth a great effort. I think he will pursue and punch with purpose, which will only give way to a better Pacquiao. I see Pacquiao using his movement, speed, and fast combination punching to stay a step ahead in the early going. I picture a fast-paced and exciting bout. Pacquiao’s attack will begin to put a dent in Clottey’s resolve over the second half of the bout, causing his workrate to dip. Manny will sweep the final rounds and wind up winning about 10 rounds. I think Clottey will earn a moral victory in making it to the final bell.

Rich Thomas: Joshua Clottey is a tough fighter in the great Ghanian tradition of tough fighters, but I fear he is more like Ike Quartey than Azumah Nelson. He is a tough fighter and a serious threat to anyone who gets in the ring with him, but there is something in there that leaves him just short making the transition from being a good fighter into an excellent or a great fighter. Like Quartey, he is one of these guys who always seems to come just short when matched with a boxer who truly has the right stuff.

That said, Clottey is tough as nails. Miguel Cotto was looking somewhat fragile even before Pacman got to him, and I am starting to think that he might be one of these boxers who has a short, bright career with an early end, ala Donald Curry or Wilfred Benitez. Clottey might not have the championship grit, but his body is made of tougher stuff. He will be game going at least as far as the late rounds, although when it comes to making that last big push to pull himself out of the hole, Clottey won’t make it.

Prediction: Pacman UD12.

Nathan Nau: In a bout that most experts think is a mismatch, Manny Pacquiao will use his superior footwork, hand speed, and combinations to hold off the tough and larger Clottey. I believe this fight will be closer than most experts think, with Clottey having his moments, but ultimately failing in an upset bid via a closer than expected unanimous decision.

Prediction: Pacquiao by unanimous decision

Scott Dryden (ProFighting-Fans.com): Clottey is a very tough competitor who has a ton to gain with a victory. He will bring it to Pacquiao which will make for a very exciting fight, at least for awhile. As he often does, Manny will take over the fight in the 5^th round and will dominate from there on out. Pac-Man adds to his impressive victory with an 8th round KO.

Prediction: Pacquiao via 8^th round KO

Ryan McArthur: Just before Clottey fought Miguel Cotto back in March 09, he just may well have been the most underrated pug in the business. Just after Pacquiao fought Cotto 5 months later, he did become the most revered and feared fighter on the planet. Remember while watching Pacquiao that we just may be witnessing the best fighter the sport has seen since Roberto Duran of the 1970s.

Of course Pacquiao is the favorite here, and rightly so, he’s earned it. The fact remains however that this is a really tough and extremely well matched bout. Clottey is technically sound, a good body puncher and the strongest fighter Pacquiao has faced in his Hall of Fame career. Will this be enough though to stop the Pacman bandwagon?

Ultimately I’m going to have to say no and take the easy way out. Pacman by Unanimous Decision. He’s just far too busy, too fast and too good for the very competent Clottey (he just doesn’t throw enough punches to beat the Filipino).

Jake Emen: Clottey is a very good fighter, but he seems to be just good enough to be able to complain loudly about losing his biggest fights. He came up short against Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto when both were winnable fights. There’s a chance that weighing 165 lbs or so on fight night will allow him to walk through Pacquiao’s shots and walk him down, landing thudding shots that take the speed out of Pacquiao’s legs and arms. That’s a small chance however, and Pacquiao should be able to buzz in and out of Clottey’s range, taking advantage of his cover up defense to score with plenty of telling shots.

Pacquiao is not using drugs said Clottey

MANILA, Philippines – Challenger Joshua Clottey of Ghana said he didn’t even think of requiring pound-for-pound champ Manny Pacquiao to undergo blood tests when talks leading to “The Event” started months ago.

Clottey, who will clash with the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight king on March 13, said he has too much respect for Pacquiao.

"I don't want to do that (seek blood test) because I respect him so much," Clottey said in a report posted on LasVegasSun.com.

The drug testing demand was the reason the negotiations between the camps of Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. collapsed.

The American fighter insisted that they both undergo Olympic-style drug testing, insinuating that the Filipino fighter may have been using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).

"I don't think Manny Pacquiao would do that. If he is, he's cheating the sport, but I believe he's not," said Clottey.

The Ghanaian even described the change to fight Pacquiao as "a blessing".

Life goes on even without Floyd
Meanwhile, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who handles both Clottey and Pacquiao, said fight fans will still see a great fight between the two boxers even as their effort with Mayweather didn’t go quite well.

"Life goes on. If Joshua beats Manny, who knows? Maybe Mosley beats Mayweather and we do a Mosley vs. Clottey fight. Who the hell knows?” Arum said.

"If these were walkover fights, nobody would give a damn. Are they consolation prizes? Well, in a way. The one fight everybody wanted to see didn't happen for one reason or another but now we've got, on March 13, a really good, competitive fight that I believe is Manny Pacquiao's toughest fight yet."

"The Event" will take place on March 13 (14 in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas Texas.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey Predictions

Pacquiao is once again facing a formidable opponent who posses an obvious size and strength advantage, yet he is an overwhelming favorite. Does Clottey have a real chance to win?
When the negotiations for a fight against Mayweather fell through, the camp of Pacquiao quickly turned their attention to Joshua Clottey, a fighter that was arguably the best and most dangerous opponent available at the time.
Shane Mosley was set to face Andre Berto and Yuri Foreman, another fighter considered to be a legitimate opponent was taken out of consideration since he was fighting in a higher weight class and thus enjoyed an even more size and height advantage than Clottey. As a result, Team Pacquiao turned their attention on Clottey.
Clottey has an impressive record of 35 wins against only three loses, and most of those loses have come from controversial decisions. Many observers thought he won the fight against Cotto and he was disqualified in his fight against Baldomir for a low blow in a fight that he was winning on the scorecards, despite not being given any warning first.
Now he is set to fight Pacquiao, a boxer/puncher, whose combination of speed, power and unorthodox style has so far overpowered his opponents in his ascension to the upper weight classes.
Clottey certainly has a chance to beat Pacquiao but it's slim to none since he will need to change his style and that's difficult at this stage of his career.
Sure, he has a significant size advantage as he often weighs in around 170 lbs. during the day of the fight, but one thing that should be noted is the fact that Pacquiao has been sparring against much bigger guys since his fight against Oscar such as junior middleweight Shawn Porter.
Also Pacquiao has now proven that he is a legitimate welterweight. Pacquiao must seem like the smaller fighter when looking at both fighters upper body, but Pacquiao probably enjoys an advantage as far as lower body strength is concerned. In an interview with Fighthype.com when asked about Pacquiao's bodybuilder legs and how it has allowed him to carry his punches in the higher weight class, Shane Mosley stated, "I think so, I mean that's just genetics. He carries his weight in his legs, which is beneficial to him to be able to generate all that power off that back leg. The way he throws punches, it's harder than what it seems. It looks like he's just throwing a lot of shots, but he uses his legs very well to push off the ground and get proper leverage on the shots."
Secondly, Clottey's tendency to focus too much on defense will not work against Pacquiao, who is a punching machine and comes to fight all twelve rounds. Clottey's tendency to hold punches was his main downfall against Cotto and can easily be the main factor in his fight against Pacquiao. He needs to be more aggressive in order to disrupt Pacquiao's rhythm specially in the first few rounds where he needs to survive the early onslaught from the Filipino icon.
Also, Pacquiao's movement and ability to throw punches from angles, while moving at any direction will be too much for Clottey who does not have great lateral movement. A fighter needs to be light on his feet and be quick in order to beat Pacquiao. It's not just his ability to throw punches from all angles that makes the Filipino icon dangerous, but his ability to close the gap quickly because of the explosiveness he generates from his legs.
In addition, his high guard might work well against an orthodox fighter, but it will be less effective against Pacquiao who can still land punches behind his high guard because he can jump and throw punches simultaneously while moving side to side.
Another factor against Clottey is Pacquiao's ability to take a punch. Miguel Cotto is arguably a harder puncher than Clottey and Pacquiao was able to stand some solid blows from the Puerto Rican star. He was hurt a few times by Cotto, but was never in serious trouble. if he can walk through Clottey's stiff jabs and get close, he can punish Clottey with body shots which will force the the latter to open up his high guard. Once Clottey opens up, Pacquiao will have a field day landing his straight left and his new weapon the right hook.
Joshua Clottey is certainly a solid fighter, but Pacquiao is on a whole another level and even though the former is known for having a granite chin and has never been knocked down, I won't be surprised if Pacquiao stops him in the later rounds. Clottey might provide more competitive rounds than Cotto did in his fight against Pacquiao, but just like Cotto, he is destined to suffer the same fate. A late round TKO stoppage probably around the 10th round.

“I actually think Pacquiao-Clottey is a pretty good fight. If you'd told me 15 months ago that Manny would be fighting Clottey, I'd have been pretty excited. It's only disappointing when viewed in the context of what we wanted to see. Clottey, as we all know, is big and tough and he has a strong jab. The problem, of course, is that especially as a fight wears on, he just doesn't throw enough. That will likely be his undoing against Pacquiao. Clottey may cause Pacquiao some trouble early, a little like Cotto did, but once Pacquiao finds his timing and rhythm; Clottey will have a hard time keeping him off. I think Pacman will dominate the second half of the fight and wind up a comfortable points winner.”

Tough fight for both but they will be paid handsomely so they can't expect something easy...... I see a fight with some good exchanges but Clottey fades, as he did against Cotto, down the stretch, late stoppage or wide UD 12 for Manny. Believe it or not, Manny is still coming to his peak.
